A Thoughtful Approach to Clearer Skin

Skin Pigmentation Treatment at Sculpt Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery

Dark spots have a way of lingering. A breakout clears, but the mark stays behind, or a patch of discoloration fades only to deepen again after time in the sun. At Sculpt Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, we look at the color, pattern, depth, and likely cause of the pigment to understand what your skin needs. From there, our team creates a personalized skin pigmentation treatment plan designed to bring greater clarity and balance to your complexion.

Where Uneven Tone Begins

What Is Skin Pigmentation?

Melanin gives your skin its natural color. It is made by cells called melanocytes, which respond to sunlight, hormones, and inflammation. When these pigment-producing cells make extra melanin or distribute it unevenly, dark spots or broader patches can develop.

This is known as hyperpigmentation. It can affect people with every skin tone, although the color may look different from one complexion to another. Some areas appear tan or dark brown, while deeper pigment may take on a gray, purple, or nearly black tone.

Vitiligo is different. It causes the skin to lose pigment, creating lighter or white patches that need medical evaluation. At Sculpt, we address excess or uneven pigment, including sun spots, melasma, and discoloration left after acne or irritation.

The Right Treatment Starts With the Cause

Why Does Hyperpigmentation Develop?

Sun Exposure

Sun exposure is one of the most common reasons pigment becomes uneven. UVA and UVB rays stimulate melanin production, which can eventually leave freckles, sun spots, and solar lentigines, often called age spots or liver spots.

They commonly appear on the face, chest, forearms, and hands. Age spots become more common after 50, although younger people with prolonged sun exposure can develop them too. Freckles may darken in summer and soften during the winter months.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, can remain after acne, eczema, a rash, an ingrown hair, or another skin injury heals.

PIH is particularly common in medium and deeper skin tones. Harsh scrubs, strong home peels, and too many active skincare products can create more inflammation and worsen existing discoloration.

Melasma

Melasma tends to form larger, symmetrical dark patches across the cheeks, forehead, jawline, or upper lip. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy, birth control, or hormone therapy can trigger it, while sun and heat often make it more noticeable.

Melasma may improve and then return, especially with greater sun exposure or hormonal change. It often responds best to gradual treatment and dependable sun protection.

Medications and Medical Conditions

Certain medications and medical conditions can affect pigmentation. Sudden, widespread discoloration or changes accompanied by other symptoms should be medically evaluated.

A new, changing, bleeding, irregular, or multicolored spot should also be examined by a dermatologist before cosmetic treatment.

A Plan Built Around Your Skin

Why We Look Closely Before Choosing a Treatment

Two brown spots may sit at different depths or come from different triggers. A superficial post-acne mark may respond to exfoliation, while melasma may need a slower approach that avoids unnecessary heat or irritation.

During your visit, your Sculpt provider will look at:

  • The color, pattern, and likely depth of the pigment
  • Your natural skin tone and sensitivity
  • Any active acne, irritation, or inflammation
  • Recent tanning or prolonged sun exposure
  • Current medications and skincare products
  • Previous reactions to peels or professional treatments
  • Your goals and how much downtime works for you

Taking the time to understand those details helps us treat hyperpigmentation without being overly aggressive with the healthy surrounding skin.

Finding the Right Fit For Your Skin

Skin Pigmentation Treatments at Sculpt Aesthetics

There is no single treatment for every kind of pigmentation. Your plan may use one treatment or combination therapy, depending on whether the concern involves surface discoloration, post-acne pigment, uneven texture, or several issues.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels loosen damaged surface skin cells so they shed more evenly. Depending on the formula, a peel may help fade dark spots related to sun damage, acne, or mild hyperpigmentation. Some chemical peels may also be considered for melasma, although the strength needs to be chosen carefully. Stronger is not automatically better when the skin is prone to inflammation or rebound pigment.

Microneedling With PRP

Microneedling creates tiny, controlled channels that stimulate collagen and gradual skin renewal. PRP, made from a small sample of your blood, supplies concentrated platelets and growth factors to support healing. It can be helpful when post-acne discoloration appears with acne scars, enlarged pores, or uneven texture, allowing us to address several changes left behind by breakouts.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. It is not a laser. The treatment stimulates collagen and elastin while improving uneven tone, acne scars, enlarged pores, and rough texture. Morpheus8 may be considered when pigmentation is only part of the concern, such as post-acne marks accompanied by shallow scars. Your provider will decide whether RF microneedling suits your skin tone and discoloration.

HydraFacial and Customized Facials

HydraFacial cleanses, gently exfoliates, clears congestion, and hydrates. It can help with dullness, mild uneven tone, and surface buildup. HydraFacial and customized facials are better suited to maintenance and mild hyperpigmentation than deeper or hormonally driven pigment. They can also support hydration between corrective treatments.

Topical Skin Care

What you use at home can support your professional treatments. Ingredients such as vitamin C, kojic acid, azelaic acid, retinoids, and hydroquinone are commonly used to reduce hyperpigmentation or slow excess melanin production. Hydroquinone is often used as a first-line topical treatment but should be medically supervised. Retinoids may take four to six months to show their full effects. Because several strong products used together can worsen irritation, a simple routine chosen for your complexion is often more helpful than chasing every new OTC product.

Fotona Laser

Fotona Laser uses two complementary wavelengths to address discoloration at different levels of the skin. Treatments can range from a light micro-peel to deeper resurfacing, helping improve sun damage, dark spots, uneven tone, and rough texture. Your provider will adjust the treatment depth and intensity based on your skin tone, the type of pigmentation present, and the amount of downtime that works for you.

Clearer Skin Beyond the Face

What Areas Can Be Treated?

We can evaluate discoloration on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms, back, and other suitable areas. Treatment depends on the cause, size of the area, and your skin’s response to previous care.

Personalized From the Start

Am I a Good Candidate?

You may be a candidate if dark spots or uneven skin tone bother you and you are willing to follow the recommended aftercare. Realistic expectations are important, particularly with melasma or pigment that has been present for years.

We may need to postpone or adjust treatment if you have active acne, an infection, open skin, recent tanning, uncontrolled irritation, or a medication that increases sensitivity. Pregnancy or breastfeeding may also limit which procedures and topical treatments are appropriate.

Progress at Your Skin’s Pace

What to Expect From Your Consultation and Treatment

During your consultation, we’ll talk about when the discoloration started, what makes it darker, what you have tried, and how your skin reacts to treatment. We’ll also review your medications, skin care, sun habits, and preferred recovery time.

Preparation may include staying out of the sun, pausing retinoids or exfoliating products, and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently. Your actual appointment will vary based on the treatment selected. Most sessions last 30 to 60 minutes, and you may feel warmth, tingling, or light prickling.

Protecting the Clarity You’ve Gained

Recovery and Results

Recovery may involve a few hours of redness or several days of flaking, swelling, or sensitivity. After a chemical peel, pigment can temporarily look darker as surface cells shed. Let the skin release naturally rather than picking or scrubbing.

Mild surface discoloration may begin to fade within a few weeks. Deeper pigment, melasma, and long-standing PIH generally improve more slowly and may need a series of treatments. Results also depend on controlling the original trigger. New acne, irritation, hormonal changes, and UV exposure can all create more pigment.

How to Prevent Pigmentation From Returning

Daily sun protection is essential. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even when it is cloudy, and reapply when you spend extended time outdoors. Wearing protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses gives your skin more coverage. Sun-protective clothing is especially useful when prolonged sun exposure is difficult to avoid.

Keep the rest of your routine gentle. Avoid picking at acne, over-exfoliating, or layering several irritating products. Your provider may recommend maintenance treatments and skincare products that fit comfortably into your routine.

Bring Greater Clarity to Your Complexion

Why Choose Sculpt Aesthetics for Skin Pigmentation Treatment?

At Sculpt Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, we do not assume every dark spot needs the same treatment. Our providers look at your complexion as a whole, then select from chemical peels, microneedling with PRP, Morpheus8, HydraFacial, Fotona laser, and customized facials based on what your skin actually needs.

You will understand why we are recommending a treatment, what it can realistically improve, and how to care for your skin afterward. The goal is clearer, healthier-looking skin that still feels completely like your own.

Skin Pigmentation Treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on why the pigment developed, how deep it sits, and whether you also want to address texture or acne scars. Chemical peels may work well for surface discoloration, while microneedling with PRP or Morpheus8 may be considered when post-acne marks occur with textural changes.

No. Chemical peels, microneedling, RF microneedling, facials, and topical treatments can all play a role. Laser treatments and IPL are used in some cases, but they are not the right answer for every skin tone or every type of pigmentation.

Some spots can fade significantly, but treatment cannot stop the skin from producing melanin again. Sun exposure, hormones, acne, and inflammation can create new discoloration, which is why sunscreen and maintenance care are so important.

Yes, when the treatment is chosen carefully. Medium and deeper skin tones may be more likely to develop PIH after irritation, so your provider may recommend a gentler starting point or longer spacing between sessions.

Yes. Melasma is affected by hormones, sun, and heat and tends to return. Sun spots are localized areas of UV damage and may respond more predictably to exfoliating or targeted professional treatments.

Some mild hyperpigmentation may improve after one treatment, while deeper or widespread pigmentation usually needs a series. We will recommend a schedule after seeing your skin and learning how it has responded to previous care.

Cost depends on the treatment, the size of the area, and the number of sessions recommended. We will provide a personalized estimate during your consultation.

Have a spot evaluated if it is new, changing, irregular, multicolored, painful, itchy, or bleeding. Sudden or widespread skin discoloration also deserves medical attention before cosmetic treatment.
